Please read all the information below especially if you are new to the Halestone Recital process. Every attempt is being made to make our production process as smooth and trouble free as possible. If you need more information than is provided in this handout, you are confused about directions, or there is a problem, call the studio at 463-7444 and leave a detailed message on the studio voice mail or email the director at mail@halestone.com. We have over 130 children participating in the recital and many of them are dancing in more than one dance. Dancers should be prepared organized, and well rested for the challenge of performing. So, now it’s time to prepare and get organized! (And don’t forget to schedule the time to rest!!)
RECITAL DATES, TIMES, AND PLACE
All dress rehearsals and shows are at the Lenfest Center for the Arts on the campus of Washington and Lee University. There are three recital shows:
Saturday, June 4th, at 7:00pm / Sunday, June 5th , at 2:00pm / Sunday, June 5th, at 7:00pm
Tickets are $6.00 in advance and can be purchased during regular studio hours at Halestone Dance Studio beginning Monday, May 23 (before or after class please). A recital fee is not charged for the Spring Recital. However, in order to cover the cost of the recital production (theater rental, programs, and fees for the theater staff) tickets are sold for each recital performance on a first come, first served basis. We will not reserve tickets, take orders over the phone, or hold tickets. Any tickets still available at recital time will be sold for $8 at the door. Tickets may be paid for with cash, money orders or checks. (Checks should be for tickets only. Do not include overdue tuition or costume fees on checks for tickets. They will be refused.)
Complimentary student tickets will be distributed for the Sunday evening show; that is the only time recital dancers can attend the show free of charge. If your dancer plans to attend any part of the other two shows, you will need to purchase a ticket for their seat.
Help sell tickets!! As a studio, staging our recitals each year depends on the financial support provided by full houses of audience members who have all bought tickets. This means we also depend on folks to be conscientious when attending our shows to buy a ticket (even if it seems really easy to walk in and take a seat without one!) We are fortunate to be using W&L’s facility at a bargain price. However, each recital show your child participates in still costs thousands of dollars to produce and buying tickets for the show is a way of distributing the expense in an equitable way throughout our dancing community. Besides—your children put on a great show, one that we can all be proud to invite our friends and family members to come and see. So please spread the word! $6 per ticket is a small price to pay for so much enjoyment! (And don’t forget that a recital ticket makes a great end of the year gift for teachers and school administrators.)
LENFEST CENTER SPACING & DRESS REHEARSALS
Spacing and Dress Rehearsal attendance is mandatory. Attached to this sheet is the Spacing and Dress Rehearsal schedule for Tuesday, May 31 through Friday, June 3. Any child absent from their scheduled dress rehearsal will not be allowed to perform in the recital. Each class has a separate rehearsal time so please make note of your child's rehearsal time for each class they attend. For their rehearsals, dancers should arrive on time and report promptly to the production assistant in the auditorium of the Lenfest Center. The assistant director will be taking roll and organizing the classes before they proceed to the stage.
Costumes ARE NOT required for spacing rehearsal. Costumes ARE REQUIRED For all dress rehearsals and hair must be styled as for the performance. Stage makeup will not be applied for rehearsals. If you have signed up to help as an offstage assistant for the Creative Movement classes during the show, you must attend the dress rehearsal with your child in order to receive your instructions.
Please do not plan to leave your child at the Lenfest Center before or past their designated rehearsal time. It is dangerous and irresponsible to leave unattended children in the theater. Little ones left to "watch" by themselves do not always understand why they can't climb on seats, run around and make noise. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and children will be asked to leave the premises if they are misbehaving.
Arrival times: Your child should arrive promptly, in costume, and be escorted to their dressing room 45 minutes before curtain time. Children being escorted to the dressing rooms should enter the Lenfest Center at the downstairs lobby doors. Please do not enter the auditorium to take your seat before the house opens (1/2 hour before curtain time).
Makeup: Parent assistants will apply makeup to preschool and grade school dancers before the performance in the dressing room area. Dancers in Middle School and High School should provide their own make-up and be prepared to apply it themselves (eye-shadow, lipstick, blush, mascara).
Hair: Hair should be styled for the dress rehearsal and the performance. In general, hair should be neat and well secured. Bangs are fine, only if they are cut above the eyebrows; otherwise they should be slicked back with styling gel or hairspray and held in place with bobby pins. No “whispies” or flyaway strands of hair in the face will be allowed. Please do not use any bows or hair clamps that are not a part of the costume and use only non-colored hair bands to secure hairstyles. (Dancers with very short hair don't have to worry about any of this and are fine just the way they are!)
Jewelry, Nail Polish, Etc: Dancers are required to remove all jewelry and nail polish at recital time for dress rehearsals and performances.
Costume changes: If you are the parent of a young child who must change costumes during the recital because they are in more than one number, YOU OR AN ACCEPTABLE GAURDIAN MUST BE BACKSTAGE TO ASSIST. Sometimes older dancers can be enlisted to help. Please make these arrangements for your child as necessary.
BY THE WAY, WHO’S WATCHING THESE KIDS
Backstage help is needed! Please sign up to be a backstage class chaperone for at least one performance. You will get to see your child perform from backstage as a helper. (For some people, this is even more fun than sitting in the audience). It is so important that the children are adequately supervised during the recital. Helpers are needed to apply makeup, monitor behavior in the dressing rooms, escort dancers to the stage, and escort them back to the dressing rooms after their number. Sign-up sheets will be kept at the studio and made available during regular studio hours.
If you have very young children in the recital (preschool, kindergartners, first graders), please note: For the Sunday evening performance, seats will be reserved and complimentary student tickets will be issued to all the dancers so that they can watch the recital on Sunday night. For the Saturday’s evening performance and Sunday’s matinee show, you MUST retrieve your youngster from their dressing room during intermission (after their time on stage is ended). The 2nd half of the show is a blast and we’d love to have you stay but if you wish to leave at that time, you are free to do so. If you plan to stay and watch the rest of the performance with your young dancer on either Saturday night or Sunday afternoon, you will need to purchase a ticket for your dancer for that performance. No matter what, do not plan to leave young children backstage after intermission. Backstage helpers for the grade-school classes will be dismissed at intermission time and there won’t be anyone supervising your child if you leave them in the dressing room or backstage area after intermission.

Your cooperation and understanding is appreciated. THANKS!
