About the Event
Julia Vessey, Halestone’s former Ballet Director and devoted practitioner of Butoh, is graciously returning to Halestone to offer two workshops for our community.
Butoh is an avant-garde Japanese dance theater form often described as the "dance of darkness" or the dance of the subconscious. Emerging in postwar Japan, it explores transformation, sensation, and the unseen inner body. Rather than focusing on solidified steps, Butoh invites you to move through imagery, texture, weight, and internal states which allows the body to become strange, expressive, and surreal. It is slow, visceral, and at times unsettling in a beautiful way.
Julia is one of the few western artists with extensive training in this form, making this a very special opportunity for our community. Halestone has not been able to offer this practice in over a decade, and we are incredibly grateful to welcome Julia back to share it with us!
